AGI

Artificial General Intelligence

Hypothetical AI matching human cognitive ability across domains.

acronymAI & MLSenior

When you'd see it: Strategy and hype-heavy AI conversations. AGI is the hypothetical AI that matches human ability across any task.

Why it matters: AGI is the long-horizon goal of AI broad enough to handle any intellectual task, as opposed to today's narrow systems that each do one thing. The distinction matters because most "AI" claims describe narrow tools, not general intelligence.

Common mistakes: Treating today's AI as AGI. Current models, however capable, are narrow systems. AGI remains hypothetical and its timeline is genuinely contested.
