When you'd see it: General AI discussions. ANN is the umbrella term for the neuron-inspired models behind most modern AI.

Why it matters: An ANN is the broad family of layered, neuron-inspired models that all deep learning builds on. Knowing it is the parent term clarifies that CNNs, RNNs, and transformers are all specialized neural networks.
