Available capacity to take on more work — borrowed from networking (data transmission capacity) and applied to people and teams.

When you'd see it: Resource allocation discussions, project intake, prioritization conversations. 'Do we have the bandwidth to take this on?' is asking whether the team has capacity. 'I don't have the bandwidth for this right now' is a polite way to decline or defer a request.

Why it matters: Bandwidth is the operational reality that sits behind every prioritization decision. Teams that pretend they have unlimited bandwidth take on too much and deliver less. The phrase is how people signal capacity constraints without saying 'we're already overloaded.'

Common mistakes: Treating 'no bandwidth' as a permanent state rather than a prioritization conversation. If a team never has bandwidth for anything new, the question isn't capacity — it's prioritization. Everything on the existing list is a choice; the question is whether the new thing is more important than the least-important current thing.
