conversion rate
Conversion Rate
The percentage of people who take a desired action out of the total who had the opportunity. Formula: conversions ÷ total visitors (or sessions, or users) × 100. The definition of 'conversion' depends on context: purchase, sign-up, demo request, form fill, and so on.
When you'd see it: Landing page analysis, e-commerce reporting, email campaign results, and every funnel stage where action-taking is measured. 'Our signup page converts at 12%' means 12 of every 100 visitors complete the signup. CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization) is the discipline of improving these numbers.
Why it matters: Conversion rate is a force multiplier on acquisition spending. Doubling conversion rate from 2% to 4% generates twice the output from the same traffic — equivalent to doubling your media budget but at a fraction of the cost. This is why CRO is often the highest-leverage activity in growth: it makes every dollar of acquisition spend work harder.
Common mistakes: Comparing conversion rates without controlling for traffic quality. A retargeting campaign converting at 15% and a cold prospecting campaign at 0.5% can both be working correctly for their objectives — the audiences are completely different. Also: measuring at the wrong funnel stage (total site visitors instead of visitors who reached the relevant page).
