cross-functional team

A team composed of members from multiple functional disciplines — typically product, engineering, design, data, and sometimes marketing or sales — organized around a shared goal or product area rather than a shared skill set. Cross-functional teams are the primary unit of delivery in modern product organizations. They reduce handoffs and context loss by keeping the skills needed to ship a product together under one roof.

When you'd see it: Product org design, squad models, feature team structure, OKR alignment frameworks.

Why it matters: Functional silos create coordination overhead and misaligned incentives. Cross-functional teams align incentives by making all members responsible for the same outcome, not just their function's output.

Common mistakes: Calling a team cross-functional without giving it real autonomy. A cross-functional team that still requires sign-off from each functional manager is a matrix structure in disguise.
