When you'd see it: Onboarding conversations, new-hire check-ins, mentorship discussions. 'You're going to be drinking from a firehose at first, but it gets better' is the standard reassurance given to new joiners overwhelmed by context and systems.
Why it matters: The phrase normalizes the overwhelm of rapid onboarding. Recognizing it as a phase (not a permanent state) helps both the new hire and the manager — the hire knows it's expected, the manager knows they need to sequence and filter what they're pouring.
Common mistakes: Treating 'drinking from the firehose' as an excuse not to prioritize onboarding structure. If everyone who joins your team feels this way for the first three months, the information architecture is the problem, not the people.
