employee engagement
The degree to which employees feel emotionally invested in their work and the organization — willing to go beyond minimum requirements, advocate for the company externally, and stay when opportunities arise. Typically measured via pulse surveys (short, frequent) or annual engagement surveys. High engagement correlates with lower attrition, higher productivity, and better customer satisfaction scores.
When you'd see it: HR metrics programs, Gallup Q12 surveys, eNPS tracking, manager scorecards.
Why it matters: Gallup research consistently finds that companies in the top quartile of employee engagement outperform peers on profitability, productivity, and customer metrics. It is an operating metric, not just an HR feel-good number.
Common mistakes: Measuring engagement without acting on the results. Surveys that don't lead to visible change lower engagement further by signaling that feedback doesn't matter.
