Headcount

The number of employees at a company or in a specific team or department. Often abbreviated HC in planning documents. Headcount is both the metric (how many people) and the planning currency (we're requesting 3 HC in the next quarter).

When you'd see it: Budgeting, annual planning, and organizational design. Headcount planning determines how much the company spends on compensation — in most SaaS businesses, people are 60-80% of total costs. 'We're flat on headcount this year' means no net new hires. 'We're growing HC by 20' means 20 new roles.

Why it matters: Headcount is a leading indicator of cost structure and operational capacity. Adding headcount takes months to have impact (hiring, onboarding, ramp) but immediately affects the burn rate. Cutting headcount has faster cost impact but damages culture and capability. Both moves are slow to reverse, which is why headcount planning is treated carefully.

Common mistakes: Treating headcount as the primary solution to every capacity problem. Adding people before optimizing process or tooling often creates coordination costs that offset the capacity gain. 'More headcount' is expensive, slow, and irreversible enough that it should follow a genuine process/tooling analysis.
