When you'd see it: Chatbots, search, and intent detection. NLU is the part that figures out what a user actually means.

Why it matters: NLU is the understanding half of language AI, extracting meaning and intent from messy human text. It is what lets a system route 'I cannot log in' and 'my password will not work' to the same place.
