pipeline management

The ongoing process of tracking, prioritizing, and advancing deals through the stages of a sales cycle — from prospecting through close. Pipeline management includes deal reviews, forecast roll-ups, and stage-gate criteria that determine when a deal moves forward. The discipline distinguishes between pipeline (all deals in play) and forecast (the subset expected to close in a given period).

When you'd see it: Sales team meetings, CRM usage, revenue forecasting, board reporting.

Why it matters: Undisciplined pipeline management makes forecasting unreliable and deal advancement inconsistent. The pipeline is the revenue team's most important shared asset — and the biggest source of noise when it's poorly maintained.

Common mistakes: Letting deals sit in stages too long without explicit criteria for advancement or disqualification. Stale pipeline inflates forecasts and creates false confidence.
