Positioning

How a product is framed in the customer's mind relative to alternatives: who it's for, what category it's in, and why it's different. The one-sentence answer to 'what is this and why should I care?'

When you'd see it: Messaging, launches, and competitive strategy. A positioning statement usually reads 'For [target], [product] is the [category] that [benefit], unlike [alternative].'

Why it matters: Positioning decides how every other piece of marketing lands. Weak positioning makes a good product invisible; sharp positioning makes a decent one feel essential.

Common mistakes: Positioning against everyone instead of a specific alternative. The mind files things by contrast, so 'better than X' beats 'great for everything.'
