Modern encryption protocol securing internet traffic (successor to SSL).

When you'd see it: Security and the web. TLS is what puts the padlock and the "s" in https.
Why it matters: TLS encrypts data moving between a browser and a server so it cannot be read or altered in transit. It is the successor to SSL, even though people still say SSL out of habit.
Common mistakes: Saying SSL when you mean TLS. SSL is the deprecated predecessor. Modern transport encryption is TLS.
