URI

Uniform Resource Identifier

Superset of URL -- any resource identifier (URLs and URNs).

When you'd see it: Web and API discussions. URI is the formal term that includes URLs.

Why it matters: A URI is the general identifier for a resource, and a URL (a web address) is the most common kind. The distinction rarely matters day to day, but it explains why specs say "URI" where you would say "URL."
