closing the loop
Closing the Loop
Following through on a commitment or conversation to confirm it's been completed — not just initiating action but verifying the outcome.
When you'd see it: Project management, stakeholder communication, customer follow-through. 'I want to make sure we close the loop on this before the quarter ends' means someone is tracking whether a commitment has been completed, not just initiated.
Why it matters: Most task failures aren't failures to start — they're failures to finish and confirm. Closing the loop is the discipline of treating a task as done only when both sides agree it's done. Teams that close loops consistently build significantly more trust than those who don't.
Common mistakes: Treating 'I sent the email' as closing the loop. Sending is initiating. Closing requires confirmation — did the other party receive it, understand it, and act on it? The loop isn't closed until both sides have confirmed.
