North Star
The single most important metric or strategic goal — the one that guides all other decisions and trade-offs. In product, the North Star Metric (NSM) is the one number that best captures the value users get from the product.
When you'd see it: Product strategy, OKR-setting, and company all-hands. 'What's our North Star?' is asked when a team needs a single, unambiguous measure of success to align disparate decisions. Famously: Airbnb's NSM is nights booked, Spotify's is time listened, Slack's was daily active users sending messages.
Why it matters: A North Star prevents local optimization — teams making decisions that look good for their own metrics but hurt the thing that actually matters. When everyone knows the single number that defines success, trade-off conversations get faster and alignment gets easier.
Common mistakes: Choosing a vanity metric as the North Star. Page views, app downloads, or registered users can look like progress while the business is dying. A good NSM measures customer value actually received, not activity on the way to value. Also: having too many North Stars — one metric, or it's not really North.
