onboarding
employee onboarding
The structured process of integrating a new employee into an organization — covering administrative setup, role context, team introductions, cultural norms, and the ramp period during which the employee builds the knowledge to be fully productive. Effective onboarding significantly improves time-to-productivity and 90-day retention. Most research suggests the first 90 days determine whether a new hire will stay.
When you'd see it: HR system configuration, manager training, L&D content, new hire experience programs.
Why it matters: Poor onboarding is expensive: the average cost to replace an employee is estimated at 50–200% of their annual salary. Structured onboarding reduces early attrition and accelerates contribution.
Common mistakes: Treating onboarding as the first day (paperwork, laptop setup) rather than a 30/60/90-day ramp program with milestones and regular manager check-ins.
