Glossary term

talent acquisition

The strategic function responsible for sourcing, attracting, evaluating, and hiring candidates. Distinct from recruitment (which is transactional — fill this role) in that talent acquisition is ongoing, building pipelines, employer brand, and recruiting processes that serve long-term workforce needs. In larger organizations it sits within HR; in early-stage startups it is often a founder or generalist responsibility.

When you'd see it: Scaling phases, Series A–C hiring plans, HR team design, recruiter OKRs.

Why it matters: Hiring speed and quality are competitive advantages, especially in technical roles. Talent acquisition effectiveness directly determines how fast a company can grow.

Common mistakes: Conflating filling open roles with building a talent pipeline. Reactive hiring (reactive to opened requisitions) produces slower results and higher costs than proactive pipeline development.
