Paid Media

Any advertising placement that requires paying for distribution — search ads, social ads, display, sponsored content, connected TV, out-of-home, and paid influencer partnerships. Contrasted with earned media (press coverage, word of mouth) and owned media (your website, email list, social followers).

When you'd see it: Marketing budget discussions, channel strategy reviews, and media mix planning. The 'paid vs. organic' tension is a constant in growth discussions. Early-stage startups often lean heavily on paid to acquire first customers fast; mature companies manage a mix of paid, organic, and owned channels to reduce CAC over time.

Why it matters: Paid media is scalable, predictable, and immediate — you can forecast roughly how much traffic or reach a given budget will buy and start seeing results within days. It's the fastest way to test product-market fit and messaging with real audiences. The fundamental weakness: it stops the moment you stop paying. Without building organic or owned channels in parallel, you're renting your audience permanently.

Common mistakes: Treating paid as a long-term growth engine without building complementary channels. Companies that rely entirely on paid media are exposed to CAC inflation as ad auctions become more competitive and targeting restrictions (iOS privacy changes, cookie deprecation) erode efficiency. A healthy channel mix reduces this risk.
