Organic Traffic
Website visitors who arrive via unpaid channels — most commonly search engine results (SEO), but also direct navigation, social shares, referrals from other sites, and word of mouth. Contrasted with paid traffic, which requires active ad spend to generate.
When you'd see it: SEO reporting, content marketing ROI discussions, and acquisition channel mix reviews. 'We get 50,000 organic visitors per month' means 50,000 people found the site without clicking an ad. Organic traffic is broken down by source in analytics tools: organic search, direct, referral, organic social.
Why it matters: Organic traffic compounds — a piece of content written today can generate traffic for years, unlike a paid campaign that stops when the budget runs out. High organic traffic reduces CAC and reduces platform dependency. It's the long-term play: slow to build, but the economics improve as the content library grows and domain authority increases. The combination of paid (for immediate results) and organic (for compounding returns) is the standard playbook for sustainable growth.
Common mistakes: Treating all organic traffic as high-intent. Traffic from a viral social post (high volume, usually low purchase intent) looks identical to traffic from 'best CRM for mid-market SaaS' in an organic search (high intent). Segment by source and keyword intent to understand the actual quality of the organic base. Also: measuring organic traffic without tracking organic conversion rates — raw traffic numbers without conversion data don't tell you if the traffic is valuable.
