Tiger Team
A small, intensely focused cross-functional group assembled to solve a specific hard problem quickly — often bypassing normal organizational process to move faster.
When you'd see it: Crisis response, complex technical problems, or high-priority strategic initiatives where normal team structure is too slow. 'We're putting together a tiger team to fix the customer churn spike' means a dedicated cross-functional group is being assembled outside the regular org chart, often with executive sponsorship.
Why it matters: Normal teams have competing priorities and processes that slow them down. A tiger team grants focus, authority, and urgency in ways that a regular team doesn't have. The tradeoff is that pulling people off their regular work creates debt elsewhere — tiger teams should have a clear end condition.
Common mistakes: Never disbanding the tiger team. A 'temporary' group that solves its problem and then stays intact becomes a permanent team that didn't go through headcount planning. Define the success criteria and exit condition upfront.
