Value Prop

Short for value proposition — the specific benefit a product or service delivers to a customer that justifies choosing it over alternatives. The answer to 'why should I buy this from you, specifically?'

When you'd see it: Sales decks, marketing copy, and product positioning. 'What's our value prop for the mid-market segment?' is asking for the specific, concrete reason a mid-market buyer should choose you. A good value prop names who it's for, what problem it solves, and what makes the solution better than the alternative.

Why it matters: A clear value prop focuses the entire go-to-market motion — messaging, channel selection, sales conversations, and product prioritization all flow from it. A fuzzy value prop ('we help companies be more efficient') leads to scattered marketing and confused sales reps. A specific one ('we reduce finance team close time by 40%') gives the team something to sell against.

Common mistakes: Confusing features with value. 'We have AI-powered analytics' is a feature; 'we find revenue you're leaving on the table, on average $150K per customer' is a value prop. Also: writing the value prop for your product as you imagine it, not as your best customers actually experience it. Talk to customers before writing it.
