first-touch attribution
First-Touch Attribution
An attribution model that assigns 100% of the credit for a conversion to the very first marketing touchpoint a customer ever interacted with — the channel or campaign that first introduced them to the brand.
When you'd see it: Content and brand marketing teams that want to demonstrate the value of awareness channels. Less common as a default setting than last-touch. Used when the strategic question is 'where do our best customers come from first?' rather than 'what closes deals?'
Why it matters: First-touch attribution identifies which channels are best at creating new customer relationships. It answers a real strategic question: if we want to find more customers like our best ones, where did they first encounter us? The weakness is the mirror image of last-touch: it overvalues top-of-funnel and ignores the conversion journey.
Common mistakes: Using first-touch to justify awareness spend without connecting it to revenue outcomes. 'Organic search was the first touch for 60% of our customers' is useful, but you also need to know whether those organic customers converted better or worse than other cohorts. Attribution models are hypotheses about causation — test them with incrementality studies.
